How much does moving cost? A full checklist of expenses

· 6 min read

When people move they usually work out the monthly rent and forget the rest. Yet the cash that leaves your account on moving day can be several multiples of the rent: deposit, rent up front, fees, movers, furniture and small surprises.

The list below helps you budget before you move. Prices vary a lot by city and season, so we give the items and a method rather than numbers.

The upfront cost list

ItemNote
First rentOften paid in advance
DepositCommonly one or two months; refunded when you leave
Agency feeDepends on the agreement; get the amount in writing
MoversVehicle, helpers, packing
Household itemsFurniture, appliances, kitchen
ConnectionsElectricity, water, gas, internet
Cleaning and repairsPre-move cleaning, small fixes
BufferA little for surprises

To add them up in one table use the moving cost calculator.

A worked example

Take a home with monthly rent of $1,200, one month paid up front and a two-month deposit:

ItemAmount
First rent$1,200
Deposit (2 months)$2,400
Agency fee$600
Movers$400
Household items$800
Other$150
Total$5,550

That is about 4.6 months of rent. The deposit can come back when you leave (deposit and shared items), but you need the cash on day one. With roommates you only work out your own share.

Watch for hidden costs

Ways to spend less

  1. Pick your timing: end of summer and month end are busy; if you can, move on a weekday.
  2. Buy second-hand and share items with roommates (first apartment checklist).
  3. Get several quotes from movers and be flexible on day and time.
  4. Collect free boxes from shops.
  5. Plan ahead: a four-week schedule cuts last-minute costs.

Moving costs with roommates

Agree shares of shared items, the deposit and movers up front. Write down who paid what, who keeps what and what happens if someone leaves. If you record shared costs in Ev Ortağım who owes whom shows up automatically at month end, and our guide to settling up when a roommate leaves helps when someone does.
