Shared household expenses list: what roommates split

· 6 min read

Everyone in a shared home asks the same thing: "Is this a shared cost or mine?" Without a clear list, tiny amounts turn into big arguments. The fix is to write down which costs are shared as soon as you move in.

Below you will find the common categories, a split suggestion for each and a short method for making your own list.

What counts as a shared expense?

A shared expense is a cost everyone in the home uses or benefits from. A personal expense is only used by one person. The line is sometimes blurry (a coffee machine, say), so it is best to make the list together up front.

The usual list

ExpenseUsually split
RentEqually or by room size
Building feesLike rent
Electricity, water, gasEqually; by days after a long absence
InternetEqually
Cleaning suppliesEqually (shared shopping)
Shared groceries (toilet paper, oil, salt, detergent)Equally or from a house fund
Household items (vacuum, pans, shared TV)Equally; whoever buys
Small repairsEqually, or tell the landlord
Trash bags, light bulbs, batteriesHouse fund

The grey areas that cause arguments

Make your own list in four steps

  1. Write everything down: every cost you can think of in a month and a year.
  2. Sort into three columns: shared, personal, disputed.
  3. Talk through the disputed ones: decide equal, by use or personal for each.
  4. Write it and share it: put the decision somewhere permanent, not in a chat. It can be a clause in your house rules.

A house fund for small things

Doing the maths for toilet paper, bin bags and detergent every time is tiring. The fix is a house fund: everyone puts in a small amount each month (say $20), small shared costs are paid from it and it is topped up when it runs low. See how to start a house fund.

Why keeping a record matters

If an expense is shared it needs a record. Without the date, who paid and how much you can't make a fair settlement at month end. In Ev Ortağım you can add each expense with its category, date and split, and the monthly summary shows the total and who paid what. You can also use the Excel expense tracker.

Frequently asked questions

What are shared household expenses?

Rent, building fees, electricity, water, gas, internet, cleaning supplies and shared groceries are the most common shared costs.

How do roommates split groceries?

Shared items such as oil, detergent and toilet paper are split equally; things only one person eats stay personal. A house fund makes small purchases easier.

When should we make the expense list?

In your first week. Agreeing in advance is the easiest way to avoid arguments later.
