Just moved in, or want to set up a routine with your housemates? These templates make it easier. They are starting points; adapt them to your home.
Excel expense tracker
An Excel file where you log shared expenses with date, category and who paid; it works out the total and each person's net balance. The first three rows are examples; delete them and add your own. Replace the names on the Summary sheet with your housemates' names.

House rules template
Copy it into your group chat or print it for the fridge. Fewer rules are better; five or six that everyone really follows are enough.
Quiet hours: Weekdays 11 pm – 8 am, weekends midnight – 9 am.
Guests: Overnight guests need a day's notice; at most ... nights a month.
Cleaning: Common areas are cleaned on a weekly rota; we wash our own dishes the same day.
Shared costs: Bills and shared groceries are paid by the ... of each month, split equally (or as agreed).
Belongings: Nobody uses someone else's things without asking; we keep a shared shopping list.
Communication: We talk about problems face to face and calmly, not by message; a short house meeting once a month.

Roommate agreement draft
This does not replace your lease; it puts the internal arrangements between roommates in writing. Its legal force and validity vary by person and place; ask a lawyer when something important is at stake.
