How it works
Rent share = Rent ÷ Take-home pay × 100. For example $1,200 rent on $4,000 of pay is 30%. The tool also shows rent plus bills as a share of income and what remains.
What is the 30% rule?
A commonly quoted rule of thumb is that rent should not exceed about 30% of take-home pay. It is a general guideline, not advice or a requirement; it varies by city, income and debts. If you share with roommates your share is smaller, so the ratio drops. More in our post on how much rent you can afford.

How do I calculate it with roommates?
Enter only your own share of the rent. Add your share of bills in the bills box to see the total housing ratio.
Should I use net or gross income?
Net (take-home) income, because that is what pays the rent.
