When rooms are different sizes, an equal split may not be fair. Enter the total rent and each room's area and each person's share is worked out for you. You can also set aside a share for common areas (living room, kitchen, bathroom).
The starting values are an example; replace them with your own.
How it works
The common-area percentage (for example 20%) is taken off the total rent and split equally. The rest is divided by room area: share = common part ÷ people + remaining rent × (their room ÷ all rooms).
Which method is fair?
What matters is that everyone agrees to the method up front. If rooms are similar, split equally (set the common share to 100% or enter equal areas). More examples in our guide to splitting rent and bills.
Frequently asked questions
How do you split rent by room size?
Divide the total rent in proportion to each room's area. For rooms of 180, 120 and 100 sq ft the shares are 45%, 30% and 25%.
What is a common-area share?
Living room, kitchen and bathroom are the same for everyone, so part of the rent is split equally and the rest is distributed by room.
Is it better to split equally or by room size?
Equal is simplest when rooms are alike. If size or features differ (a balcony, a private bathroom), splitting by room is fairer; what matters is that everyone agrees up front.
